The Tenge Spread: Measuring What Conversion Really Costs
A method for finding the margin between the rate you are shown and the rate the market is using, in tenge.

Every venue quoting a tenge price adds a margin to it. The margin is usually larger than the fee and it is never itemised.
Why there is a margin at all
The venue has to convert tenge into whatever it actually holds, and carry the risk between your transaction and its own hedge. That costs something and it is recovered in the rate.
The question is not whether a margin exists. It is how large.
The measurement
Note the rate the venue is quoting for tenge against the dollar at the moment of your transaction. Compare against the reference rate from an independent source at the same time.
The difference, as a percentage, is the margin. Record it with the time, because it moves.
When it widens
Outside banking hours, at weekends, and during periods when the tenge itself is moving. All three for the same reason: hedging is harder and the venue prices that.
A conversion made on a Saturday evening will usually carry a wider margin than the same conversion on a Tuesday morning.
The two-step problem
If a venue prices in dollars, a tenge purchase crosses two margins: tenge to dollar, then dollar to crypto. Both are embedded in one displayed number.
Somewhere the conversion to tenge is one step, not two removes one of them outright. On a large amount this is the single biggest saving available.
What to record
Date, time, amount, quoted rate, reference rate, and the venue. Six fields. After ten entries you know what your venue charges and whether it is consistent.
A venue whose margin varies enormously without an obvious cause is a venue to compare against another.
What this changes
Nothing about small purchases, where the absolute amount is trivial. A great deal about anything large or regular.
A business converting monthly is paying this margin twelve times a year.
Where to get a straight answer
Exchanges that publish the tenge spread state the margin rather than embedding it, which makes the measurement a verification instead of a discovery.
Where no figure is published, take your own measurement before committing to a venue for anything recurring. Collect & Exchange quoting in tenge directly is the version of this that can be checked in thirty seconds.
