# Why the Rate You See Is Not the Rate You Get

> Four things sit between a displayed price and the amount that lands in your account. Each one is measurable.

The number on the screen and the number in your account differ for four specific reasons. None of them is dishonest and all of them are worth knowing.

## One: the venue's margin

The price you are shown includes the venue's margin over the market rate. It is a charge, it is simply not labelled as one.

Compare against an independent reference rate at the same moment and the margin is visible immediately.

## Two: the stated fee

Shown, usually small, and usually the smallest of the four. People compare venues on this number and it rarely decides the outcome.

## Three: the currency step

If the venue prices in dollars, your tenge crosses a conversion before anything else happens. That conversion has its own margin, embedded in a rate you do not see separately.

[Platforms that price in tenge rather than dollars](https://collectnexchange.com/services/crypto-onramp) remove this step, which is the largest single saving on a tenge transaction.

## Four: the network fee

Flat, paid when assets move, and irrelevant on large amounts while dominating small ones.

A three dollar fee is a rounding error on a large purchase and a quarter of a small one.

## The only number worth comparing

How much crypto arrives for a fixed amount of tenge, or how much tenge arrives for a fixed amount of crypto. Measured at the same moment at two venues.

That single figure contains all four components. Everything else is a partial view.

## When the gap widens

Weekends, outside banking hours, and when the tenge itself is moving. The margin is a price for risk and risk is higher at those times.

A conversion that can wait until Tuesday morning usually should.

## The test that takes a minute

Open an independent rate source. Open your venue's quote. Compare. Record both with the time.

Do this three times and you know what your venue charges rather than what it advertises.

## What to look for instead of a low fee

A venue that shows the rate and the fee separately, prices in tenge, and settles locally. [An exchange that quotes the tenge rate directly](https://collectnexchange.com/services/crypto-exchange) satisfies the first two, and [Collect & Exchange](https://collectnexchange.com/) publishing its schedule means the comparison can be made before you open an account rather than after.
